Retro wraps for Volkswagen campervans

Retro wraps for classic Volkswagen campervans using vinyl supplied by Spandex

Over 20 classic Volkswagen campervans have been wrapped with bespoke retro 70s designs using Arlon DPF 6000XRP vinyl supplied by Spandex.

Cambridge-based Iconic Signs, a well-established full signage company dedicated to vehicle graphics and restaurant signage, took up the challenge to design and wrap campervans for pioneering holiday rental company, Wedubyou. The initial project will complete with the wrapping of approximately 60 vans, which will be available for rental in France, Spain and New Zealand.

Iconic Signs has worked with Burwell-based Type 2 Detectives, who specialise in classic Volkswagen restoration, for many years. So, when WeDubYou commissioned Type 2 Detectives to source all of the classic vehicles for its new business venture, it was only natural that they turned to Iconic Signs for help.

Mike Swift, owner of Iconic Signs and Spandex customer for five and half years, describes his enthusiasm for the project: "When Type 2 Detectives contacted us about this project, we jumped at the opportunity to get involved. We worked closely with Type 2 Detectives who carried out all the necessary vehicle repairs such as mechanical functionality and trimming the interiors. We then created the full wrap project, from the design and artwork, to the wrap itself. The intention is to be as loud and vibrant as possible."

The team at Iconic Signs considered everything from quality and durability to the cost and customer service when considering the Arlon DPF 6000XRP vinyl and colour change Arlon Ultimate PremiumPlusTM films. "We chose Arlon DPF 6000XRP because of its excellent print quality and conformability, both huge factors when working with vehicle graphics. The matching 3210 laminate series also offers the perfect gloss finish.

"For us, the most fun and challenging element is definitely developing the designs. The installation is probably the easiest part as we have lots of experience in this area and we know Spandex will deliver the materials we need, when we need them," concludes Mike.
