FESPA UK is proud to unveil the next stage of its Pioneering Next Gen initiative – Next Gen Supported Learning, a transformative initiative designed to connect young people with promising careers in the print, signage, and graphics industry. This initiative aims to bridge the skills gap, support employers in filling key job roles, and create meaningful opportunities for young people with disabilities, to gain work experience and progress into employment.
A Unique Opportunity for Employers
Employers across England and Wales are invited to take part in this fully funded programme, which offers a six-week work placement followed by a one-year internship. This initiative is designed to be flexible, with learners engaging in a combination of workplace experience (2-3 days per week) and college learning (2 days per week), tailored to the needs of both the employer and the learner.
To ensure a smooth transition, each learner is supported by a dedicated job coach, providing guidance to the employers and their whole team, as the learners settle into their new role. The colleges provide comprehensive support, including staff awareness training, ensuring that both employers and learners have the resources needed to thrive. At the conclusion of the internship, participants will be awarded a FESPA UK recognition certificate, showcasing their practical industry experience and strengthening their future career opportunities. Ideally, the intern will become a valued team member and secure a permanent position. However, if either the learner or employer decides not to proceed with employment, the learner will continue their education, while the employer can welcome a new intern to provide valuable skills and experience.
Jon Hutton – FESPA UK, Business Development Executive said “It’s a memorable day when we had that lightbulb moment and realised, we’re in the incredible position to contribute in transforming the lives of such wonderful individuals. To help develop the project and our understanding, we’ve been meeting with educators, leaners and involved business owners across the country, which has given us vital and inspirational insights into a project that we are so proud to present and lead to our industry.’’
Making a Difference
Over the past five months, FESPA UK has forged strong partnerships with more than 60 colleges across England and Wales, ensuring a pipeline of eager and talented young individuals ready to take their first steps into the industry. Employers who participate in the programme will not only help nurture the next generation of talent but also benefit from fresh perspectives and potential long-term employees.
Interactive Learners Job Page
FESPA UK has also created an interactive learner’s job page, allowing employers to search for learners in their area and learn more about the young people who would like to be part of the project. FESPA UK members have exclusive access to this webpage as part of their membership, offering a seamless way to connect with potential interns. However, we encourage non-members to reach out as well and support these incredible young individuals in developing life skills, gaining valuable experience, and exploring future employment opportunities.
We already have a variety of learners who would be well-suited for roles in design, production, or administration, ensuring that businesses can find candidates that match their specific needs.
Molly Jackson – FESPA UK’s Marketing and Content executive, and head of the Next Gen Project said “ This initiative is a real game changer for our industry. It’s amazing to see a real push for supported learning, something that should be a common standard. These learners bring fresh ideas, determination, and invaluable skills that will genuinely enhance businesses. It was time for change, and I hope more companies recognise the potential and impact of giving these young people the opportunities they deserve.”
Join the Movement
This is an incredible opportunity for employers to make a real impact while addressing their recruitment needs. By getting involved in the Next Gen – Supported Learning project, businesses can play a pivotal role in shaping the future workforce and fostering a more inclusive industry.
Suzi Ward – FESPA UK MD said “It’s truly incredible to see the Next Gen project evolve into this exciting new phase. Supporting young people from all walks of life is so important, and those with disabilities have just as much to offer as any other employee. They bring unique strengths, talents, and perspectives—it just takes businesses looking beyond their quirks to see their potential. With the right opportunities, they can become valued and impactful members of any team.”
