Drytac SpotOn White M50 used for Macy’s window display

Capital INK spreads festive cheer with Drytac SpotOn White M50 for Macy’s window display.

Graphics, wraps and signage provider Capital INK Branding Solutions used Drytac SpotOn White M50 monomeric PVC film to create a colourful Christmas window display for iconic US retail chain Macy’s.

Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, Capital INK delivers a wide range of printing and design services to customers across the US, covering applications such as exhibition graphics, vehicle wraps, window graphics and retail displays. Through its project management division, it also runs an installation network that spans North America.

With such a diversified service offering, Capital INK has been able to establish a customer base that reaches into various markets and industries. One such sector is retail, where Capital INK linked up with Macy’s on a festive window graphics project last Christmas.

Capital INK was tasked with producing and installing window borders and vinyl accents around the Macy’s retail store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The concept was not new for Capital INK, with the company having worked with the Philadelphia location on similar projects in previous years.

“I initially received a call to repair some damaged material at the Philadelphia location and have stayed involved with the Macy’s team ever since then,” Capital INK National Sales Director Dave Heit said.

For the most recent project, which was rolled out over the Christmas 2023 period, Capital INK chose to work with Drytac’s SpotOn White M50. The product features specialist light blocking properties that helped Capital INK overcome a particular challenge with the application.

“All the graphics were to be produced second surface and installed from the interior but two of the windows have a permanent, black border already installed second surface,” Dave said, “So, for these two windows, we were asked to install the graphics first surface.

“The challenge was that Macy’s had recently added a clear security film to their storefront windows. We reached out to the security film’s technical team and were told that most adhesive vinyl applied over their security film would damage the film’s top layer or cause a haze effect upon the removal of the applied graphics.

“After testing many other adhesive vinyls, SpotOn White M50 was the only material that adhered well and removed cleanly with no damage to the security film. Everything went smoothly after finding the Drytac product.”

Capital INK used its Canon Colorado 1650 to print the colourful design onto the Drytac film before its specialist team installed the pieces. Such was the success of the job that Dave said Macy’s will now be using the same method of application in all its future festive displays.

“The client was extremely pleased we found an adhesive product that worked for these windows,” Dave said. “They were also happy with the end results of the installation and our commitment to providing the highest level of service and responsiveness.

“Furthermore, they liked the look of the first surface graphics so much more than the second surface graphics that they decided moving forward, all their holiday window applications will be first surface applications, using Drytac SpotOn White M50, so as not to damage the security film.”
