Northprint 2011 is a vital UK platform, declare major industry suppliers

Northprint 2011 [www.northprintexpo.com], which takes place in Harrogate from 10th to 12th May, has already attracted an impressive line up of major industry suppliers, with manroland, Konica Minolta and Ricoh confirming a considerable presence at the show early on in the pre-show cycle.

Industry suppliers have been particularly enthusiastic about the host of new innovations and attractions at the show, geared to providing real value to visitors by delivering a quality mix of technology and applications, interactive case study demonstrations and educational workshops and seminars.

Trevor Crawford, director of the IIR Print Group, says: “With many suppliers still finalising their marketing plans for 2011, we’re delighted about the early industry-wide support the show has already received to date. We’re engaged with a number of companies about their involvement in Northprint and are confident that the current exhibitors will act as a magnet for suppliers with similar or complementary products.”

Commenting on the decision to exhibit at Northprint, Norman Revill, managing director, manroland GB, says: “We’re very pleased to announce that we will be exhibiting at Northprint 2011. It’s a great exhibition with a proud heritage and deserves to be supported by the industry. manroland is the market leader in sheetfed presses in the north of the UK, so Northprint will provide us with a great platform to meet with our loyal northern customers and those nationwide printers considering investing in a manroland press.

“Representatives from all our commercial divisions – sheetfed, printcom and printserivces - will be on hand throughout the show to discuss how manroland can help printers add maximum value to print and continue to create greater efficiencies in their print operation. We will also be showing on the stand regular video presentations highlighting our broad portfolio of products and services as well as a smaller version of our VAP (value added print) tunnel, which was so successfully introduced at Ipex 2010.”

Ricoh has committed to printing the event’s Show Daily newspaper on its stand at Northprint. Chas Moloney, marketing director, Ricoh UK, also emphasises the importance of Northprint: “The economy is still in a difficult phase, with many printers finding business harder now than they did twelve months ago, despite the fact we are technically out of the recession. However, to support the print industry and its growth, it’s important the market, and Ricoh as a business, look to the future by committing to key industry events such as Northprint. Ricoh as an organisation is continually innovating and this is demonstrated through the evolution of our products, market solutions and additional support services, such as our Business Driver Programme. By signing up to Northprint early, we are demonstrating that print is still a strong sector and exhibitions such as Northprint continue to provide a key platform in which to communicate with customers and prospects.”

Konica Minolta’s product manager for production print, Pauline Brooks, says: “Konica Minolta is exhibiting at Northprint 2011 as part of our ongoing policy of supporting the print industry. We believe that it is crucial to demonstrate to the industry the latest hardware and software solutions that can stimulate business for all areas of the commercial print market. Northprint has always been an significant event in the UK’s print industry calendar. There are a number of new and innovative initiatives to stimulate interest and attendance at the show. For example, the new ‘Printers’ Profit Zone’ will focus on a range of profit-making ideas, including cost-effective solutions customers can invest in for variable data and PoD.

“At the show, we will be demonstrating the new bizhub PRESS colour digital press series, our mono digital production press range and our Solutions Portfolio. With the high level of confidence and the exciting new ideas being poured into the show we are looking forward to welcoming visitors onto the Konica Minolta stand next May.”

Alongside the exhibitors and their technologies, some new innovations and attractions are planned for Northprint 2011 that go beyond the traditional trade show format. New to the event will be a theatre-style ‘Litho Technology Centre’ where offset manufacturers and distributors, accompanied by their customers will run videos, demonstrations and case study-style presentations. A dedicated Wide Format Applications Showcase will highlight a range of innovative applications to printers that are thinking of diversifying and investing into Wide Format technology.

Following its success at Ipex 2010, new to Northprint 2011 will be the Printers’ Profit Zone, which will provide a series of free business growth seminars throughout the three days of the show. The BPIF’s Financial Alliance team of experts will also be hosting a Finance Clinic where printers can ‘drop in’ for impartial advice on a range of subjects to provide ideas for funding.

“Beyond Northprint acting as the largest and most successful national print show in 2011, the show’s attractive features will provide an unmissable ideas forum for the UK print community. We’re really excited about the positive industry reaction and commitment from suppliers and are working closely with exhibitors, visitor groups and print experts to ensure that Northprint will extend its reach even further, appealing to commercial printers, finishers, print buyers, publishers, marketing agencies and designers nationwide,” concludes Trevor Crawford.

Mutoh "Wraps Up" SEMA Las Vegas 2010

Visitors raced to Mutoh's booth at the SEMA Las Vegas 2010 Tradeshow. LIVE vehicle wrap demonstrations were presented by Sign-A-Rama.  The daily demonstrations helped draw in crowds of spectators as they surrounded Mutoh's booth to learn vehicle wrapping techniques.

Mutoh showcased the ValueJet 1614- 64", "The Wrapper's Choice," and the ValueJet 1304-54" printer that contains Patented Intelligent Interweave Printing: impeccable print quality that virtually eliminates banding, using Eco-Ultra Inks for richer, bolder colours that last up to three years outdoors without lamination.

"Mutoh had one of the busiest booths at the show.  Performing car wrap demonstrations drew in the crowds and helped us gain new clientele," shares Ashley Robbins, owner of Sign-A-Rama in Redding, California.

The wraps were printed using SAi Rip software on Avery Dennison's MPI 1005 Supercast Easy Apply RS. Material was then run through a Neschen Americas SEAL laminator to give the product a sharp, clear look on the vehicle.

Mutoh also demonstrated their new Kona Cutters. The cutters allow easy vinyl handling and ensure the finest cutting quality with excellent tracking. Kona can handle multiple applications ranging from vinyl letter cutting to window film, paint protection and decal creation.

PrintIT! 2010 winner sees the future of print at Canon Expo

As PrintIT! Scotland gears up for its inaugural awards ceremony which will take place on 12th November 2010 at South Lanarkshire Council, Daniel Smith, PrintIT! 2010 winner from St Ives School in Cornwall was given a unique trip to see the next generation of print and imaging technologies at Canon Expo in Paris. In addition to other prizes awarded during the PrintIT! Awards Ceremony at Ipex 2010 in May, Daniel and his teacher were treated to the all expenses paid trip courtesy of Canon UK.

Wayne Barlow, Chairman of PrintIT!, and Director Professional Print at Canon Business Imaging Group comments, “Daniel’s entry in the PrintIT! Awards was exceptional, and he has shown real enthusiasm for the print industry. His trip to Canon Expo was the perfect way to reward the skill he has shown, while further revealing to him the ground-breaking industry which he may one day enter himself.”

With a huge range of current and future technologies on show, Daniel had the opportunity to experience the important role print plays in multiple vertical sectors, including the photographic and medical industries.

“Visiting Canon Expo 2010, as part of my PrintIT! prize, was a once in a lifetime experience,” says Daniel. “It has given me a real insight in to the print industry of the future, especially the amazing technologies that are being developed. It has shown me how the invention of products like augmented reality glasses, for example, will affect the role of designers which will in turn have a knock-on effect for the print industry. The whole experience has been an eye-opener and I have learnt so much.”

Daniel’s Design and Technology teacher at St Ives School, Cornwall, Gizela Daemi-Rashidi adds, “All of my students have benefitted enormously from the PrintIT! initiative and it has certainly been an amazing experience- especially for Daniel. Speaking as a teacher, it is heartening to be involved in an initiative which not only grabs, but holds the attention of the students, and I would encourage as many schools as possible to get involved in this fantastic competition. As for our trip to Canon Expo, I think I learnt almost as much as Daniel did. What a fantastic insight into an interesting and complex industry.”

'Winning the War on Waste' conference covers issues for future of UK Print

In the current challenging market of UK print many print industry Managing Director's will need to plan for the future to either retain or regain decent margins in 2011. Vision in Print's 'Winning the War on Waste' conference will offer 10 Best Practice case studies from industry companies on a wide range of related topics that will give plenty of practical tips to meet this urgent need, making it a must attend event.

Take 'Material Waste' as an example. Most printers have tackled this before now, but how many have effective Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and processes in place to radically reduce wastage and more importantly hold the gains? Stuart Kellock of Label Apeel will demonstrate that you do not need to be a large scale operation to tackle this professionally.

Or consider the challenge of making the best use of your Management Information. Everyone has their Management Information Systems (MIS), but how many have established a few key KPIs and engineered their MIS to deliver these rapidly so that the shop floor can make effective use of the data to drive up performance there and then? Robin Welch of GI Solutions will tell of their experience in implementing such a simple but profound change in management habits.

What about managing your paper supply to improve performance and reduce net cost? Kingfisher Print and Design has rethought its paper supply so as to gain competitive advantage through the presentation of paper and ease of use as well as ensuring they purchase competitively. Ian Symons will explain how.

Finally, we all know we need to carry the hearts and minds of our team, even through difficult periods, if we are to succeed in any initiative. Two speakers, Vincent Gridley of Howitt and Steve Whitehead of Newsprinters Broxbourne, will tell of their experience. Neither will claim they have got it right, but both have made a good fist of it and can share the lessons learnt.

These are just half of the talks at the forthcoming Vision in Print 'Winning the War on Waste' conference. The keynote speaker is Lord Heseltine, who will address 'the future of UK Print'. This should be very relevant and topical, for as well as having a lifetime in Print & Publishing; Lord Heseltine remains an active player in politics with a role in the Coalition government in Regional Funding.

The 'Winning the War on Waste' conference will take place at The Lancaster Hotel London on 22nd November 2010.
